History of the appellation Chateauneuf du Pape

Pretty little Provencal village of 2200 inhabitants located between Orange and Avignon, Châteauneuf du Pape is world famous for the quality of its wines.

Châteauneuf du Pape is the first A.O.C. Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée wine of France registered in 1936. It has 3200 hectares spread over 5 communes: Châteauneuf du Pape, Courthézon, Bédarrides, Sorgues and Orange.

Châteauneuf du Pape is considered as the 1er cru of the southern Rhône Valley.

The Symphony of the 13 Grape Varieties

Grape Varieties of Châteauneuf du Pape

13 grape varieties can be used in the assembly of a Chateauneuf du Pape. There are 8 red and 5 white grape varieties.

Grenache

Grenache charms as much by its warmth as by the roundness of its character.

Cinsault

Cinsault brings elegant, fruity aromas and supple tannins.

Mourvèdre

Mourvèdre gives a powerful, full, tannic wine, yet of great finesse.

Counoise

Counoise confers fruity and spicy notes.

Syrah

Syrah brings delicious notes of spices and violet.

Muscardin

The Muscardin brings a note of freshness as well as a floral aroma.

Terret Noir

The Terret Noir brings plum and redcurrant aromas to the wines.

Vaccarèse

Vaccarèse is distinguished by its unique floral aromas of fine elegance.

White Grenache

White Grenache produces fairly full-bodied white wines that are low in acidity, round and long on the palate.

Clairette

Clairette brings aromas of fennel, apple, lime blossom, apricot and peach.

Roussanne

Roussanne produces wines of great elegance, fine and complex, developing floral fragrances (honeysuckle, iris).

Picpoul

Picpoul can give quite fine, typical and rich wines.

Bourboulenc

Bourboulenc brings floral aromas and freshness to the blends.
